Some meals are not about the food. A tenth anniversary, a parent's seventieth, the evening someone finally asks the question — the meal is the container, and what matters is that nothing gets in the way of it.
Two things at KUT SEOUL are worth knowing before you book one of those evenings. A dessert plate lettered with your message is prepared free of charge. And a cake brought from outside carries no fee at all. Neither is advertised; both are arranged simply by mentioning the occasion when you reserve.
This is a practical guide to the rest: what to write, when to ask, which course and seat suit which occasion, and what the restaurant needs from you in advance.
The Lettering Plate
A dessert plate written by hand in chocolate — a name, a date, Happy Anniversary, Will You Marry Me — is prepared at no charge and arrives with the final course.
Because the writing is done by hand before service, the wording has to reach the kitchen ahead of time. Write the exact text in the reservation notes by the day before your visit, and the kitchen will follow it as written. English, Korean, and romanised names all work.
There is no minimum order attached to it and no extra dessert to buy. It accompanies whichever course you have booked.

Bringing a Cake
You may bring a cake from outside, and there is no fee for it. This is worth stating plainly because many restaurants at this level charge one.
Two things help on the night. Mention the cake when you book, so the kitchen expects it and can keep it cold until service. And say when you would like it brought out — after the grilled courses, or together with the lettering plate — either at booking or when you sit down.
Note that this is separate from corkage on drinks, which does carry a fee: one bottle per party, ₩70,000 for wine and ₩100,000 for whisky or champagne.
Which Course, Which Seat
Every course is built on the same BMS No. 9 Hanwoo, vacuum-aged four weeks. The choice is about length and register rather than quality.
The Signature Course (13 dishes, ₩210,000) is what most celebration bookings choose. It is the course the kitchen recommends to first-time guests, and thirteen dishes fill an evening without stretching it.
The Royal Course (15 dishes, ₩280,000) is the one people book when the evening is itself the gift. It opens with lobster sashimi and caviar and brings a lobster gratin near the end — the additions are visible ones, which is the point on a night meant to feel unlike other nights.
The Posh Course (11 dishes, ₩175,000) is the minimum in a private room at lunch, and suits a daytime anniversary or a family gathering that does not need to run into the evening.

On seating: a proposal or an anniversary for two is usually better in one of the small private rooms, where the door closes and no adjacent table is close enough to overhear. The counter is the more sociable choice — the chef works in front of you, and the evening has an audience of one. Private rooms start from the Posh Course at lunch and the Signature at dinner. Reserving, and What to Put in the Notes
Reservations are held through CatchTable or Naver. The deposit is the full amount of the order, paid at booking; cancellation is free up to two days before, refunded at fifty per cent the day before, and non-refundable on the day itself.
The reservation notes are where the occasion gets arranged. Four things are worth writing there:
The occasion itself — birthday, anniversary, proposal — so the room and the pacing are set accordingly. The exact lettering wording, copied as you want it written. Whether you are bringing a cake, and when you would like it brought out. And any allergies, which the kitchen works around within the course.
For a proposal, a phone call to +82 2-2272-8012 is worth the minute. Timing that matters to the guest is easier to agree in a sentence than in a note.
Practical Notes
A private-room dinner runs about three hours; the counter runs about two. For an anniversary that is the length you want, and it is worth booking a week or more ahead — the larger rooms fill first.
Children under seven dine in private rooms only. Ages 3–6 take the Kids Course, a single plate of six items at ₩45,000, served alongside the adult courses; from seven, adult pricing applies. A three-generation birthday fits the 6–12 room.
Prices are final. There is no service charge and no tipping, so the bill matches the menu.
Lunch runs 11:30–15:00 and dinner 17:30–22:00 with last order at 21:30; the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Ending Your Evening in Jongno
The lettering plate is a small thing — chocolate script on a dessert, gone in a few minutes. What it does is put the occasion on the table in front of everyone, without anyone having to make a speech about it.
That is most of what a restaurant can offer on an evening like this: a door that closes, courses that arrive without being asked for, and a plate at the end with the right words on it. The rest belongs to the people sitting there.
