A hwangap marks the completion of the sixty-year zodiacal cycle; a chilsun honors the seventieth year. Both are moments when three generations gather at one table — the honoree, their adult children, and grandchildren who may still need a booster cushion. What the family needs from the room is quiet enough for a toast to be heard, time enough that the meal does not feel rushed, and small acts of ceremony that make the evening feel considered rather than transactional.
Jongno is the natural setting. It is the old civic heart of Seoul, close to the palaces where the honoree's own parents might have posed for photographs, and it is where KUT SEOUL keeps five private rooms on the third floor of Hanol Tower. This guide is written for families planning that dinner: which room to ask for, which course fits which time of day, how the deposit and lettering plate work, and how to seat a grandparent, a stroller and a seven-year-old at the same table without friction.
What follows is practical rather than sentimental. Prices, hours and policies are stated exactly; anything not stated here is not offered, and asking on the day rarely improves the answer.
Which room seats the whole family?
The largest private room seats 5 to 12 guests, which covers most hwangap and chilsun parties in a single booking. There are five private rooms in total: one for 2–3, two for 2–4, one for 3–6, and the 5–12 room. Rooms cannot be joined, so the maximum party in one room is 12. If the guest list is likely to grow past twelve, that is the decision point — not the food, not the wine, but the ceiling on a single room.
The eight-seat chef's counter is adults-only and is not used for this occasion. A hwangap or chilsun with children under eight belongs in a room, both because children under eight are seated in private rooms only, and because the pace at the counter is built for eight strangers rather than one family.
3F Hanol Tower, 96 Jongno — 3 minutes from Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1·3·5) Exit 15 or Jonggak Station (Line 1) Exit 4; next to Tapgol Park; 20–25 minutes on foot from Gyeongbokgung.
KUT SEOUL is a 3-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1·3·5) Exit 15 — on weekday lunches its 8-dish ₩69,000 Bar course runs 80 minutes at the counter, reservation only.

Which course applies to which seating?
Room courses have a floor. At weekday lunch, the room minimum is the Posh course (P KUT) — 11 dishes at ₩175,000. At dinner, on weekends and on public holidays, the room minimum is the Signature course (S KUT) — 13 dishes at ₩210,000. The top course is the Royal (R KUT) — 15 dishes at ₩280,000, including live lobster sashimi with caviar and gold flake, Châteaubriand with truffle, and a lobster gratin. All prices are per person, final, with no service charge and no tipping.
| Course | Dishes | Price | When it applies in a room |
|---|---|---|---|
| P KUT (Posh) | 11 | ₩175,000 | Weekday lunch only |
| S KUT (Signature) | 13 | ₩210,000 | Dinner, weekends, holidays (also weekday lunch) |
| R KUT (Royal) | 15 | ₩280,000 | Any service |
| Kids KUT | 6 items, 1 plate | ₩45,000 | Ages 7 and under, rooms only |
From age 8, the adult course applies. For a mixed table — grandparents on Royal, parents on Signature, a nine-year-old on Signature, a six-year-old on Kids — that combination is straightforward inside one room. What is not offered is a vegetarian course; allergies, however, are accommodated within the course when notified the day before.
How long does a room dinner run, and when should we start?
A room meal runs about three hours. Dinner service is 17:30 to 22:00, with last order at 19:30, and the recommended room seating for a birthday is 17:30 to 18:00. That start lets the family finish the dessert course and the cake — and any speeches — before the 22:00 close, without staff having to compress the last plates.
Lunch service runs 11:30 to 15:00, with last order at 14:30. A weekday lunch at 11:30 or 12:00 works well for a hwangap where older relatives prefer to travel in daylight and return before dark. The kitchen is closed on Tuesdays.
Two further times worth naming: the table is released 20 minutes after the reservation time, and the deposit is 100% of the order at booking. Cancellation is free up to two days before, 50% refunded one day before, and none on the day or for a no-show. If a grandparent's health is uncertain, the two-day mark is the honest cutoff to move or cancel without cost.
What ceremony does the room actually include?
Two things that matter for a birthday, both free. A celebration lettering dessert plate — the honoree's name, an age, a short phrase — is prepared at no charge when requested in the reservation notes by the day before. And an outside cake is accepted with no fee, so the family bakery, the grandchildren's favorite patisserie, or a cake ordered in from a hotel can all come to the table.
What the room does not include is a curated flower delivery, a scripted toast from staff, or a photography package. What it does include is quiet: five rooms mean the space around the table is your own, and a three-hour reservation means the ceremony can unfold at its own pace. For a broader look at how the rooms differ from the counter, our guide on Korean BBQ vs Hanwoo omakase covers the general format; the room-specific choice for a family occasion is straightforward.
On wine and spirits: corkage is one bottle per party — ₩70,000 for wine, ₩100,000 for whisky or champagne. A single bottle brought for the toast is the practical reading of that rule.

How do we seat three generations comfortably?
Children under eight are seated in private rooms only, and high chairs are available. Kids KUT is a single plate of six items — including Hanwoo meatballs, bulgogi and a tomato pasta — served all at once at ₩45,000 for ages seven and under. That means the youngest guest is fed early in the meal and does not have to wait through thirteen adult courses.
For a grandparent with limited mobility, the front entrance is the one to use. It is step-free, through the Tom N Toms café on the ground floor, with a lift to the third. The rear entrance, on the valet side, has three steps; strollers are fine there but a wheelchair should come through the front. Valet parking is ₩5,000, Wednesday to Monday, 11:30 to 22:00, at the rear of the building.
BMS No. 9 Hanwoo, vacuum (wet) aged four weeks — not dry-aged. Grades run 3/2/1/1+/1++; since December 2019, 1++ covers marbling scores 7–9 and the number is displayed. KUT serves No. 9 only.

How do we book, and how far ahead?
Reservation only, through CatchTable or Naver. Deposit is 100% of the order; cancellation is free two days before, 50% one day before, none on the day.
When booking a room for a hwangap or chilsun, put four things in the reservation notes by the day before: the number of adults and their courses (Posh, Signature or Royal), the number of children under eight who will need Kids KUT, any allergies, and the wording for the lettering dessert plate. If an outside cake is coming, mention it so the room can time the dessert accordingly.

Lunch 11:30–15:00 (last order 14:30), dinner 17:30–22:00 (last order 19:30), closed Tuesdays.
KUT SEOUL: Bar 8 dishes ₩69,000 (weekday lunch, counter only, 80 min) · Posh 11 ₩175,000 · Signature 13 ₩210,000 · Royal 15 ₩280,000 · Kids ₩45,000 (ages 7 and under). Signature and Royal are private-room only; Posh is also served in a private room at weekday lunch (counter at weekday dinner and on weekends and holidays).
A note on scale and expectation
A hwangap or chilsun at KUT SEOUL is not a banquet. It is a private-room dinner for up to twelve, over about three hours, at the prices listed above. What the format offers is unhurried Hanwoo through thirteen or fifteen courses, a room that belongs to the family for the evening, and two small ceremonies — the lettering plate and the outside cake — that let the occasion feel marked without staging.
The honoree's role, on the night, is to sit. Everything else — the pacing of the courses, the timing of the cake, the flow of the wine — is handled by the room. That is the practical case for choosing a Hanwoo omakase over a larger galbi restaurant for these two birthdays: fewer decisions on the night, more attention on the person at the head of the table.
